freelance JavaScript Developer

at Document Cloud in New York City, NY

DocumentCloud (http://www.documentcloud.org) seeks a JavaScript and Ruby consultant to work with us on an occassional and ongoing basis over the next few months as we build out our index of primary source documents that will be used in newsrooms from the Chicago Tribune to MSNBC to Gotham Gazette.

Help investigative journalism thrive on the web!

We are a group of journalists and coders at the New York Times and ProPublica with a 2-year grant from the Knight Foundation to develop a shared index of primary source documents used in investigative reporting work. DocumentCloud will be a research tool for reporters, a semantic search engine (via OpenCalais), and a participant in the web of linked data. DocumentCloud will be free and open source software. You can review our code releases to date at http://github.com/documentcloud

We need a JavaScript developer to help build out a rich, web-based tool that journalists will use to search and organize documents, as well as visualize the relationships between documents. A strong foundation in HTML and CSS is required, bonus points for comfort in Ruby. If you think that doing full JavaScript MVC in the browser doesn't sound like a crazy idea, then this is the job for you.

If you think you are a great fit, please forward your resume, a rate quote and a short description of particularly relevant work to: jobs@documentcloud.org with "JavaScript Developer" in the subject line.
