Cog Tree is looking for a motivated software engineer to work on our cutting-edge news analytics software over the summer. Cog Tree is an early-stage, NYC-based technology company, founded in 2008. The company was fortunate enough to be chosen from several hundreds of applicants to be one of the 10 businesses funded by DreamIt Ventures, a startup incubator program in Philadelphia. Our technologies

One of the key ways we plan to differentiate our product from competitors is via a rich, responsive user interface for displaying news data. This includes not only the usability features loved by most JS Ninjas that have gone under the “AJAX” (and jQuery) monikers, but also integration with charting APIs that may make use of Javascript.

Python is also a core technology at Cog Tree. We are using it for natural language processing (using the open source NTLK library) and for web application development. We haven’t settled on a web framework yet, but are leaning toward Turbogears 2. You do not have to be a Python programmer to apply for this job, however!

Technical requirements

• At least one dynamic language, e.g. Python, Ruby, Perl. Preferably Python!
• At least one mainstream programming language, e.g. C++, Java.

• Experience in UNIX environment, working with open source technologies.

Personal requirements
—-

• Interested in a startup environment.

• Ability to relocate to Philadelphia for part or all of the summer.

Desirables
—-

• Interest in Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Data Visualization.
• Experience with web crawling, indexing, and scraping technologies.
• Experience with web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

• Passion for product design.
