UC Online Education (UCOE) is a new system-wide pilot program that works with faculty and staff across the University of California campuses to design and deliver online courses to UC undergraduates. In the near future, UCOE will also deliver select online courses to learners and programs beyond the UC campuses.
Under the management of the UCOE Tech Lead, the Web Application developer will work as part of a dynamic team of Instructional Designers, technologists, and project managers focused on online course design, development, and the learning environment. The ideal candidate will enjoy collaborating with this creative team to define and design requirements and then execute them. The programmer will develop interfaces and application functionality for the Sakai Open Academic Environment (OAE), the software platform used to support online educational modules and courses. Strong front-end and UI development skills are required, with experience integrating with third-party applications using external and internal APIs or IMS specifications such as LTI.
Candidate must be a creative self-starter and able to problem solve and structure their work within a start-up environment.
The UCOE Web developer position is a one-year contract position with full benefits, with the possibility of renewal.
Requirements:
Extensive professional experience developing web-applications with Java, Javascript and related technologies.
A deep understanding of Javascript best practices and patterns with a demonstrated portfolio
Minimum 1 year experience with jQuery framework
Experience with user-focused design methodologies, and demonstrated experience in defining and solving complex user design problems.
Experience with RESTful web services design
Extensive experience with scripting tools/languages such as Perl, PhP, Ruby on Rails etc.
Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and solve complex problems.
Experience with modern SCM tools such as Maven, Ant, Subversion, and Git
Knowledge of other related areas of IT and Software Engineering best practices
Knowledge of SQL may be helpful
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; an ability to convey complex concepts to technical and non-technical team members.
Ability to seek detailed knowledge from other java and javascript programmers and translate it into advice and planning documents for end users (faculty) and other system designers
Strong team player who enjoys collaboration and mentoring
